E&CO offers Independent Living Services (ILS), a special skills program designed to foster successful independence for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are interested in learning how to live more independently in the community. For more information click here (PDF).

The ILS Program helps individuals learn Essential Life Skills such as:

Housing Assistance

ILS Program services include help in researching, locating and securing suitable community-based housing, including the key steps involved in moving into a new home.

  • Completing rental/leasing applications
  • Security deposits and rental agreements
  • Moving into and furnishing the home
  • Section 8 housing
  • Home safety and household budgeting

ILS Parenting Program

This program supports individuals who are expecting a child or are already parents. It provides assistance in all areas of prenatal healthcare, planning for birth, as well as parenting skills:

  • Maintaining medical appointments for mother and child
  • Hygiene and cleanliness
  • Home safety
  • Proper nutrition
  • Stages of child development and appropriate ways of disciplining
  • Assistance with household budgeting

Classes – Santa Clara (PDF)
The ILS Program offers over fifteen classes which focus on learning essential life skills such as diabetes awareness, self esteem/assertiveness training, basic computer knowledge, cooking/nutrition, among other options.

Housing Sites – Santa Clara (PDF)In addition to providing ongoing education and support to ensure successful independent living, Employment & Community Options also oversees four housing sites in the Northern California region Independent Living Services (ILS) program.Through joint partnerships with the Mid-Peninsula Housing Coalition and Charities Housing Development Corporation, housing units are made possible through projects-based HUD funding.Each property is maintained by an On-Site Housing Representative and includes ongoing community activities, events and monthly tenant meetings.

MILAGRO – San Jose (East)

  • Fifteen 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments; features gated, secure entry, shade trees, lawns and porches for each unit; community room, computer lab and on-site laundry.
  • All units are fully handicap accessible.
  • Site supervisor on grounds.
  • Rent is approximately 30% of household income, verified annually.
  • Located near shopping centers and bus routes.
  • ILS classes held on-site.
  • Availability Status:  FULL with a short waiting list.

STONEY PINE VILLA – Sunnyvale

  • Twenty-four 1, 2, and three 3- bedroom units located within walking distance to downtown Sunnyvale; features a gated, secure entry, community room, on-site laundry, assigned private parking spots.
  • Two-story complex with an elevator.
  • All units are fully handicap accessible.
  •  Site supervisor on grounds.
  • Rent is approximately 30% of household income, verified annually.
  • ILS classes held on-site.
  • Availability Status: FULL, lottery system to get on the waiting list.

VIVENTE II – San Jose (South)

  • Twenty-nine ground-level 1-bedroom and studio apartments located near shopping malls, grocery stores, and bus routes.
  • Handicap facilities available.
  • Site supervisor on grounds.
  • Rent is approximately 30% of household income, verified annually.
  • ILS classes held on-site.
  • Availability Status: FULL with a waiting list.

HOMEPORT – San Jose (South)

  • Fifteen co-ed, dorm-style units near shopping centers and bus routes. Features an expansive backyard, BBQ area and bicycle storage. Shared dining, kitchen, laundry areas, restrooms and community room.
  • Two story; bottom floor fully handicap accessible.
  • Site supervisor on grounds.
  • Rent is approximately 30% of income, verified annually.
  • ILS classes held on-site.
  • Availability Status: Housing is currently available.
